ChinaSCINet_Workshops
Over the past three years, we have trained all of the centers to do standardized neurological examinations and have established a standard baseline dataset that all the centers collect. In addition, we have now trained most of the centers to do preclinical testing of therapies in animals and we are now helping four of our participating academic institutions form "Discovery Centers" to develop new therapies, so that the Network can provide "one-stop shopping" to companies who believe that they have therapies that may be useful for spinal cord injury. In addition, we are forming partnerships with three of the participating centers to establish GMP stem cell banks and processing facilities to provide the cells for transplantation.

Investigator Meeting/Workshop on Cell-based Therapies
In the ChinaSCINet Investigator Meeting, Prof. Waisang Poon from the CUHK and Dr. Gilberto Leung from the HKU introduced the CN102b protocol, explained cell preparation and shared umbilical cord blood mononuclear cell transplant experiences on chronic spinal cord injured patients with the group. Based on the preliminary phase II trial experiences, the multicenter trial on cord blood cell transplant and oral lithium had been delineated and discussed among the investigators. In the Workshop on Cell-based Therapies, researchers and clinicians from US, China and India reported latest preclinical and clinical results of cells therapies in treating spinal cord injuries.

Surgery & Rehabilitation Workshop
Surgeons from Hong Kong, Taiwan and US watched three spinal cord decompression surgeries including intradural compression in PLA Kunming General Hospital. They were very impressed, and also discussed the possible adoption of intradural compression.

Rehabilitation experts from US and Taiwan and the surgeons watched the intensive walking training program in this hospital. They seriously discussed the walking program that should be taken after the cell transplant in the coming clinical trials.

Spinal Cord Injury Outcome Assessment Workshop

Ms Malka Itzkovich, from Loewenstein Hospital, Israel, and Ms Mary Schmidt Read, from Magee Rehabilitation Center, USA, introduced SCIM (Spinal Cord Independence Measure) and WISCI (Walking Index for Spinal Cord Injury), respectively. Investigators from ChinaSCINet and SCINetUSA joined this workshop, and discussed the adoption of these two outcome assessment tools in clinical trials.

Spinal Cord Injury Research Method Workshop

ChinaSCINet, HKU-SCIFund, Institute of Neuroscience of the Fourth Military Medical University, W.M. Keck Center for Collaborative Neuroscience offered an intensive five-day training workshop on spinal cord injury research method.

This  workshop includes lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on experience in all facets of spinal cord research.  Featured is the MASCIS Impactor, rat model of spinal cord contusion that has been adopted by over 100 of the world's leading spinal cord research laboratories.  The workshop covered anesthesia, surgery, spinal cord contusion, locomotor scoring (BBB), animal care, and other outcome measures.  Moreover, the cell transplantation methods were covered.

Over 20 investigators participated in the workshop.

Investigator Workshop on Cell Transplantation Methods for Chronic Spinal Cord Injured Patients

An investigator workshop was held in Kunming, China in March 2007. Over 60 investigators joined the meeting to discuss the methodology for transplanting cells in the spinal cord. 6 surgical teams tried the proposed cell transplantation method to the spinal cord of two monkeys and this will provide some pre-clinical safety data to fulfill the regulatory requirements for cell transplantation trial.
